BACKGROUND OF THE ASSOCIATION

BRIEF HISTORY
The Association was first founded in 1954 as a study group with the primary objective
of educating the public on mental health. It became a member agency of the Hong Kong
Council of Social Service in 1968 and the Community Chest of Hong Kong in 1969.
Incorporation under the Companies Ordinance took place in July 1970. The Association at
present has a membership of about 200, consisting mostly of professional workers from many
human service disciplines such as psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, nurses,
lecturers, professors and social workers.

OBJECTIVES
- To promote the study of basic principles of mental health and their application in Hong
Kong;
- To promote the advancement of a mental health programme in Hong Kong in its broadest
medical, social and recreational aspects, covering the needs of both the mentally ill and
the mentally handicapped;
- To further the establishment of better human relations in all possible ways;
- To establish and operate half-way houses, hostels, sheltered workshops, day training
centres, social club or any such projects on a non-profit basis.
